Space Meals Lesson Plan

Grade Level: K-4 grades

Curriculum Area: Language Arts and Science

Lesson Objectives:

  • ELA-4-E2 giving and following directions/procedures; (1,4)
  • ELA-4-E5 speaking and listening for a variety of audiences (e.g., classroom, real-life, workplace) and purposes (e.g., awareness, concentration, enjoyment, information, problem solving); (1,2,4,5)
  • ELA-5-E4 using available technology to produce, revise, and publish a variety of works; (1, 3, 4)
  • LS-E-A6 recognizing the food groups necessary to maintain a healthy body.  (1,2,4,5)

Technology Performance Indicators: Use technology tools (e.g., publishing, multimedia tools, and word processing software) for individual and for simple collaborative writing, communication, and publishing activities for a variety of audiences. (1,3)

Procedures:

  1. The teacher will read about foods used during space flight.
  2. The teacher will type a list of basic foods or use the list from the Internet. Make copies for each child.
  3. The teacher will buy freeze-dried food for tasting. (beef jerky, dried fruit mix, Tang)
  4. The teacher will introduce the topic of space food and how astronauts eat in space.
    • Thermostabilized: food that has been treated with heat (canned)
    • Intermediate Moisture: food that has has most of the water removed
    • Rehydratable: add water to this food before you eat it
    • Irradiated food: food treated with radiation to keep it from spoiling
    • Natural form/fresh food: food that you eat as it is
  5. Let students have a taste of the dried food.
  6. Give each child a food list.
  7. Discuss the food list and talk about having a nutritional meal.
  8. Have the students use a planning sheet to plan a nutritional meal.
  9. Have students illustrate their meal in KidPix.
  10. Print and display student work.
  11. Assess student work using a rubric. (See our sample)
